DAY 65: Al-Aakhir – The Last | Creative Motivations

Explanation of Allah’s Name, Al-Aakhir, from Understand Quran Academy:

Allah calls Himself Al-Aakhir— The Last— once in the Quran. Al-Aakhir is the one who neither has an end nor beginning. There is nothing beyond Him; He is the Ultimate and will remain after the whole creation has passed away!

The Last One, The Ultimate

Aakhir comes from the root hamza-khaa-raa, which points to three main meanings. The first meaning is to be latter and to put back, the second is to postpone or to put at the end, and the third main meaning is to be final, last, and ultimate.

This root appears 250 times in the Quran in six derived forms. Examples of these forms are al-aakhirati (“the Hereafter”), yawmil-aakhiri (“Last Day”), yastakhiroonaa (“seek to delay, they remained behind”), ukhraa (“another”) and al-aakhareena (“the others”).

Al-Aakhir is the last without having a first. He is above any descriptions. Al-Aakhir is logically the first to give us guidance and the last to look after those whom He guides. He will remain the last One, with no one or nothing ever comparable to Him in essence or attributes!

Al-Aakhir Himself says: . . . He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing. [Quran, 57:3]

Explanation of the Name, Al-Aakhir, from Ahadun Ahad:

The Prophet (S) said in Saheeh Muslim, “And You are the Last, and there is nothing after You.”

Explanation of the Name, Al-Aakhir, from Sheikh as-Sa’di:

The Prophet (S) explained these in a succinct and clear way while addressing his Lord, You are the First, there was none before You. You are the Last, there will be none after You. Your are the Manifest, there is nothing above You. You are the Inward, there is nothing close to you.’

Explanation of Al-Aakhir from the book, “Who is Allah?“:

Verse from the Qur’an:

{He is the First and the Last, and the Outward and the Inward; and He is Knower of all things.}  (Qur’an 57:3)

Allah (the Exalted) is the Last; there is nothing that will come after Him or exist after Him, for He will exist always and for eternity, while everything else will eventually perish. Allah (the Exalted) says: {…Everything will be destroyed except His Face…} (Qur’an 28:88) In the verse from soorah 57 (al-Ḥadeed), Allah (the Exalted) puts four of His names together: The First, the Last, the Outward and the Inward. These four names in conjunction show the vastness of Allah (the Exalted) and the vastness of His knowledge, and they indicate that there can be no escaping or hiding from Him. Everything is known by Allah (the Exalted), for He is the First, the Last, the Outward and the Inward. Ibn Katheer mentions that Ibn ‘Abbâs (May Allah be pleased with him) recommended reciting this verse when one has doubts in his or her heart.

Knowing that Allah (the Exalted) is the Last compels the hearts of the believers to sense and comprehend Allah’s greatness and eminence. This knowledge encourages them to put their own existence into perspective. With the short life spans of human beings, and the lack of control over the length of such life spans, the fact that Allah (the Exalted) is and always will be, even after everything else perishes, is most compelling to the heart.

Duaa Mentioning Allah’s Name, Al-Aakhir, from Duas.com:

Du’aa When Afflicted with Doubt in Faith:

If one finds something doubtful in his/her heart then he should recite the following verse:

“He (Allah) is The First and The Last, The Uppermost and The Innermost and He knows well all things.”

Note: Aẓaahir: Indicates the greatness of His attributes and the insignificance of every single creation in respect to His greatness and Highness, for He is above all of His creation as regards His essence and attributes.

Al-Baaṭin: Indicates His awareness and knowledge of all secrets, of that which is in the hearts and the most intimate of things just as it indicates His closeness and nearness to all in a manner which befits His majesty.

“Huwal-awwalu, wal-aakhiru, waẓ-dhaahiru, wal-baaṭinu, wa huwa bi kulli shay’in ‛aleem.”
