Explanation of Allah’s Name, Al-Awwal, from Understand Quran Academy:

Allah calls Himself Al-Awwal— The First— once in the Quran. Al-Awwal is the one who neither has a beginning nor an end. There is none prior to Him; He is self-existent, all comes from Him, and He is the cause of all that became!

The First One, The Foremost, The Pre-existing

Awwal comes from the root hamza-waw-laam, which points to three main meanings. The first meaning is to be first or to be before, the second meaning is to come back to or to return, and the third main meaning is to be foremost.

This root appears 170 times in the Quran in four derived forms. Examples of these forms are al-oolaa (“the first”), yaa ulee (“Oh men”), aali (“family, people”), al-awaleena (“the forefathers”) andtaweelih (“interpretation”).

Linguistically al-awwal means the one who advances or precedes others. The firstness of Allah Al-Awwal means: the One Whose existence has no beginning [Al-Bayhaqi] and Who existed before everything without a limit (of beginning) [Ibn Jareer At-Tabari]. Al-Awwal  deserves to be the first since He existed when there was nothing before or with Him! [Al-Khattaabi] This all refers to the same meaning, as the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:  O Allah! You are the First, and there is nothing before You… [Muslim]

Explanation of the Name, Al-Awwal, from Ahadun Ahad:

The Prophet (S) said in Saheeh Muslim, “O Allah, You are the First, and there is nothing before You.”

Explanation of the Name, Al-Awwal, from Sheikh as-Sa’di:

The Prophet (S) explained these in a succinct and clear way while addressing his Lord, You are the First, there was none before You. You are the Last, there will be none after You. Your are the Manifest, there is nothing above You. You are the Inward, there is nothing close to you.’

Explanation of Al-Awwal from the book, “Who is Allah?“:

Verse from the Qur’an:

{He is the First and the Last, and the Outward and the Inward; and He is Knower of all things.} (Qur’an 57:3)

Allah (the Exalted) is the First, meaning that there is nothing that came before Him. He has always existed, and nothing existed before Him. The First, the Last, the Outward and the Inward all come together in the above verse to show the vastness of Allah (the Exalted) and of His knowledge, and that there can be no escape from Him. Everything is known by Allah, and none can hide from Him, for He is the First, the Last, the Outward and the Inward. Anyone who is having doubts in his or her heart, concerning the religion, is advised to recite this verse.

Knowing that Allah is the First can give the servants of Allah (the Exalted) a sense of humility in the face of Allah (the Exalted). Because Allah existed before anything else and has always existed, it shows how our lives are miniscule and insignificant in comparison. This can stimulate feelings of modesty and timidity towards Allah and invoke the desire to submit to Him.

“He (Allah) is The First and The Last, The Uppermost and The Innermost and He knows well all things.”

Note: Aẓaahir: Indicates the greatness of His attributes and the insignificance of every single creation in respect to His greatness and Highness, for He is above all of His creation as regards His essence and attributes.

Al-Baaṭin: Indicates His awareness and knowledge of all secrets, of that which is in the hearts and the most intimate of things just as it indicates His closeness and nearness to all in a manner which befits His majesty.
