Explanation of Allah’s Name, Al-Waasi’, from Understand Quran Academy:

Excerpt:

Allah calls Himself Al-Waasi’— The All-Encompassing, The All-Sufficient, The Bountiless— on nine occasions in the Quran. Al-Waasi’ is beyond any limits in essence and has boundless capacities. He encompasses the whole of creation with His blessings, care, and kindness. He is the Self-Sufficient and is sufficient for all. Nothing is beyond Him, and there are no limits to any of His attributes; the mind simply can’t grasp His essence and power!

The All-Sufficient, Bountiful, and All-Pervading

Waasi’ comes from the root waw-seen-ayn, which carries three main meanings. The first meaning is that of being vast, sufficient in capacity or size, and spacious. The second main meaning of this root is to be plentiful and bountiful. The third is to embrace, comprehend, and pervade.

This root appears 32 times in the Quran in six derived forms. Examples of these forms arewasi’a (encompasses), wus’ahaa (its capacity), and waasi’atun (spacious).

The concept of waasi’ in the Arabic language points out to something that has no limits; it’s something too vast to imagine. This attribute of Allah is in itself limitless, just like His other attributes, such as His Giving, Seeing, Hearing, and Knowing.

Explanation of the Name, Al-Waasi’, from Ahadun Ahad:

Excerpt:

He is the One Who is vast with respect to His Attributes and qualities and those things linked to them – this from the point of view that none can enumerate His praise as He deserves, rather He is as He has praised Himself. Vast in grandeur, authority and dominion; Vast in bestowing grace, and Vast in Goodness and Nobility. The One who is Sufficient for His creatures needs, He provides for them with the means of living, bestows upon them from His favors and runs their affairs. He is the Most Generous who accommodates their requests and does not burden them beyond their capabilities. The One whose Mercy and Knowledge encompass everything; there is no limit for His mercy and knowledge. The One whose qualities cannot be enumerated and none can ever praise Him enough.

Explanation of Al-Waasi’ from the book, “Who is Allah?“:

Tafseer

Allah (the Exalted) encompasses all of His creation with satisfaction and generosity. His favour is immense, and He grants mercy to all things. Allah is: the One who is Generous or Magnanimous towards His servants in their deen, and who does not hold them responsible for what is beyond their capabilities. Others have said it refers to the spaciousness and completeness of His knowledge, as in [20:98], “He encompasses everything in His knowledge.” Similarly, others have said it refers to the scope of his Mercy, as in [7:156], “And my mercy encompasses all things”. Other meanings include the One whose Forgiveness is wide, and the One who is Gracious to His creation.

Application

Knowing that Allah (the Exalted) is the All-Encompassing inspires His servants to seek help from Him. They understand that Allah is the only one who can fulfill their needs, and that Allah (the Exalted) is generous in doing so and sufficient in doing so. They are grateful to Allah for the blessings He has bestowed on them, and they are calmed by the knowledge that Allah is sufficient for their needs. The servants of Allah are filled with love and affection for Allah (the Exalted), Who is sufficient for them.
