Explanation of Allah’s Name, Al-‘Aliyy, from Understand Quran Academy:

Allah calls Himself Al-‘Aliy— The Most High, The Exalted — on eight occasions in the Quran. He’s the One Whose loftiness is both in His essence and in His attributes. Al-‘Aliy is above any imperfections, above the ‘Arsh (throne). Our minds are at a loss regarding His greatness and our intellect is incapable of conceiving His perfection!

The Most High, the One Above Everyone and Everything:

Aliy comes from the root ayn-laam-waaw, which points to four main meanings. The first is to be high, lofty, and exalted and to ascend. The second main meaning is to overcome and overwhelm and the third to advance and exceed. The fourth main meaning is to be eminent.

This root appears 70 times in the Quran in fourteen derived forms. Examples of these forms are ta’aalaa (exalted is He), ta’aalaw (come), ista’laa (overcome), ‘uluwwan (haughtiness), and ‘illiyeen.

Linguistically, ‘uloow points to the attribute of loftiness, and a person is ‘alee when he is prominent. Al-‘Aliy, under whose control everything in existence is, is the Most High.

Explanation of the Name, Al-‘Aliyy, from Ahadun Ahad:

The One who is High above everyone in His power and status. To Him belongs highness in all of its aspects: Highness of His Essence, Highness of His Attributes and Esteem, Highness of Strength and Power. The One Who is Most High; an absolute Highness in every sense. His Self is High above His creation—He ascended the ‘Arsh (Throne). His Attributes are High in degree, rank, magnificence, and are evident in their perfection.

He has the Highest, greatest level of all of them, and there is nothing like unto Him in all of His Attributes. No one comprehends the state or the manner of any of His Attributes. He is Most High by being dominant over all His slaves; the One Who Has subdued all of His creatures—everything is subservient to His will and authority. Nothing occurs nor ceases to occur except by His leave. His subduing necessitates His Living, His Might, His sovereign authority, ability, wisdom, and knowledge, all of which are His Attributes.

Explanation of the Name, Al-‘Aliyy, from Sheikh as-Sa’di:

To Him belongs all Highness in all of its aspects. Highness of His Person, highness of His attributes and esteem, highness of strength and power. He is the One who has risen over His throne and the One who has encompassed the dominion. He is the one in whom all the attributes of greatness, grandeur, magnificence and beauty find perfection and fulfillment.

Explanation of Al-‘Aliyy from the book, “Who is Allah?“:

Allah (the Exalted) is above His creation. He is the One who is so great that He is free from faults. Everything is under His power and rule. Allah is: …the One who is High above everyone in His power and status. Though al-Qurtubi states that the notion of physical placement is not the subject of this attribute, it is also known that Allaah is above His creation, and He is not everywhere. Rather, His knowledge and awareness encompasses all things.

Knowing that Allah (the Exalted) is the Most High infuses the hearts of Muslims with awe, wonder, humility and surrender. The greatness of Allah is exhibited through this attribute, and the believers humble themselves before Allah (the Exalted) as a result of recognizing that Allah is the Most High.

Duaa When Waking Up at Night:

The Prophet S) said: “Whoever wakes up at night and says:

‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone and with no partner, to Him belongs [all] sovereignty and praise, and He is able to do all things; How far from imperfections Allah is, and all praise is for Allah, and none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Allah is the greatest, and there is no power nor might except with Allah, The Most High, The Supreme.’

…and then supplicates:

‘O my Lord forgive me.’

…will be forgiven.” In another narration: “and then asks [for something], he will be answered. If he then performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted.”

“Laa ilaaha ill-allaahu waḥdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamd, wa huwa ‛alaa kulli shay’in qadeer, subḥaan-allaahi wal-ḥamdu lillaah, wa laa ilaaha ill-allaahu wallaahu akbar, wa laa ḥawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaahil-‛aliyyil-‛aẓeem rabbigh-fir lee.”
