Explanation of Allah’s Name, Al-Qadeer, from Understand Quran Academy:

Allah calls Himself Al-Qadeer— The Powerful— on one occasion in the Quran. Al-Qadeer is the One with complete power. He is the One who decrees; He simply says, Be! and it is.  Al-Qadeer needs no means to do anything!

The Powerful, The All-Capable

Qadeer comes from the root qaaf-daal-raa, which points to four main meanings. The first meaning is to have the power to accomplish, to be capable. The second is to measure, to distribute something, or to make manifest. The third is to decree or ordain and the fourth is to prevail. This root appears 132 times in the Quran in 11 derived forms. Examples of these forms areyaqdiru (“he has power”), qaddarnaa (“we have decreed”), al-qadr (“of power”) and qaadirun (“is Able”). Allah ‘azza wajal refers to Himself with the nominal qadeer 45 times in the Quran, of which one mention is Al-Qadeeru, The Powerful.

Linguistically qadeer, qaadir, and muqtadir are all derived from the root qaaf-daal-raa and all of them demonstrate that power is established as an attribute of Allah and that He has absolute Power. He is the One who is capable of doing everything, who has perfect power over the creation, who measures everything with perfection, and who is the One who decrees all that was, is, and will ever be. His ability combined with His infinite Knowledge makes Him Al-Qadeer and Al-Aleem!

Explanation of the Name, Al-Qadeer, from Ahadun Ahad:

The One Who has complete and perfect Power and Ability by which He brought everything into existence, and by which He arranges all affairs. The Omnipotent, the All-Powerful, and Master of all things. He can do whatever He wills, including bringing the dead to life. The One who is Perfect in His Ability, through which He brought all beings into existence, rounded their affairs and perfectly fashioned them. If He intended a thing, His command is “Be” and it is. Moreover, every created being’s capabilities are based entirely on whatever strength Allah gives to it.

Explanation of the Name, Al-Qadeer, from Sheikh as-Sa’di:

The One who has complete and perfect power and ability by His power He brought everything into existence, by it He arranges all affairs, by it He fashioned and perfected the creation, by it He brings life and causes to die, by it He will resurrect the servants for their recompense – rewarding the one who did good with His good and the one who worked evil with His Hellfire. The one who, when He wills a thing to be, merely says, “Be! And it is.” By His power and ability He turns the hearts and directs them to whatsoever He wills and desires.

Explanation of Al-Qadeer from the book, “Who is Allah?“:

Allah (the Exalted) is able to do all things and has power over everything. He does what He wills, and none can resist His decision. Qadeer is a synonym of Qâdir, but its meaning is intensified. Ibn ‘Abbâs (May Allah be pleased with him) said that anything that Allah (the Exalted) wants to do to His servants, be it punishment or reward, is within Allah’s great power. 116 Allah (the Exalted) is in control of His dominion, and the commandment is His. He creates according to His will. He makes some happy and some miserable, as He wishes, for reasons known to Him. He cures whom He wills, makes ill whom He wills, and supports whom He wills. His is the power to do anything as He wishes. When He decrees something, then none can escape that decree. He is All Powerful in every way and over everything. As Allah (the Exalted) says in Soorat al-Ḥadeed: {His is the dominion of the heavens and earth. He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent.} (Qur’an 57:2)

Knowing that Allah (the Exalted) is All-Powerful subdues believers. Their hearts are filled with fear of Allah and awe of His power and ability. The believers are motivated to turn their hearts towards Allah (the Exalted) in submission and worship. Allah, being the All-Powerful, is the only One who has the power to answer prayers and control events in the world. Knowing this, the believers pose all of their supplications to Allah (the Exalted) and fully trust in Him to give them what is best for them in this life. They are also very aware of Allah’s power to rain down punishment on them, so they are mindful of staying away from sins and angering Allah.

“Al-Qadeer, al-Qaadir, al-Muqtadir – (the All-Powerful)”
Shaykh ‘Abd ur-Razzaaq al-Badr (hafidhahullaah) comments:

“All of these Names are mentioned in the Qur’aan, and the most-mentioned one is al-Qadeer, then al-Qaadir, then al-Muqtadir. And all of them demonstrate that Power is established as an Attribute of Allaah, and that He, subhaanah, has Absolute Power; so by His Power He brought the creation into being, and by His Power He gives life and gives death, and will resurrect the slaves for recompense, and He will reward the one who did good for his doing good, and the one who did evil for his doing evil, the One who if He wills something, He says to it: Be – and it is; and by His Power He turns the hearts to whatever He wills, and He guides whoever He wills and leads astray whoever He wills.

And due to His Absolute Power, no one can compass any of His Knowledge except what He wills to teach him, and due to His Absolute Power, He created the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in six days and no fatigue touched Him; and no one from His creation can make Him incapable, the One whose Power is free from fatigue and inability to do what He wants; and due to His Absolute Power, everything is under His disposal, so whatever He wills will be and whatever He doesn’t will will never be.

Duaa Using Allah’s Quality as, Al-Qadeer, from

Duaa When Waking Up at Night:

The Prophet (S) said: “Whoever wakes up at night and says: ‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone and with no partner, to Him belongs [all] sovereignty and praise, and He is able to do all things; How far from imperfections Allah is, and all praise is for Allah, and none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Allah is the greatest, and there is no power nor might except with Allah, The Most High, The Supreme.’ and then supplicates: ‘O my Lord forgive me.’ will be forgiven.” In another narration: “and then asks [for something], he will be answered. If he then performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted.”

“Laa ilaaha ill-allaahu waḥdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamd, wa huwa ‛alaa kulli shay’in qadeer, subḥaan-allaahi wal-ḥamdu lillaah, wa laa ilaaha ill-allaahu wallaahu akbar, wa laa ḥawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaahil-‛aliyyil-‛aẓeem rabbigh-fir lee.” ..more.
