Explanation of Allah’s Name, Al-Ghaniyy, from Understand Quran Academy:

Excerpt:

Allah calls Himself Al-Ghaniyy—The Self-Sufficient, The Independent— on eighteen occasions in the Quran. He is the one without need of anything. Al-Ghaniyy is self-sufficient, free of any dependence, and rich— while all of His creatures stand in need of Him!

The Independent, The Wealthy, Self-Sufficient

Ghaniyy comes from the root ghayn-noon-yaa which points to four main meanings. The first main meaning is to be self-sufficient and independent and the second to be free from needs or wants. The third main meaning is to be satisfied and content and the fourth to be wealthy and rich.

This root appears 73 times in the Quran in five derived forms.  Examples of these forms areaghnaa (availed), yughnee (benefits, avail)  and istaghnaa (considers himself self-sufficient).

Linguistically, ghina is used to refer to the concept of independence because of being self-sufficient. The opposite is faqr, which refers to poverty, being in need. Faqeer is used to describe a poor person. In reality no one is in absence of need of Allah ‘azza wa jall and everyone is dependent on no one other than Him. Therefore Al-Ghaniyy is the only One who truly transcends all needs, is completely satisfied, and the One upon whose wealth, riches, and blessings all others depend!

Al-Ghaniyy Himself says: But if you disbelieve – then to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allah Free of need and Praiseworthy [Quran, 4:131] …And whoever turns away – then indeed, Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy [Quran, 60:6]

Explanation of the Name, Al-Ghaniyy, from Ahadun Ahad:

Excerpt:

The One Who is completely and absolutely free from all wants. He has absolutely no deficiency of any kind. In particular, He is not in need of His creation or any actions of His creation. Rather, we are completely in need of Him. He has no need of anyone or anything, for He is All Perfect, and everything is in need of Him. If the first and the last of creation, the human and the jinn, were to rise up in one place and make a request of Him, and were He to give everyone what they requested, it would not decrease what He has anymore than a needle decreases the sea if dipped into it (Saheeh Muslim). He is the One Who is Most Generous—provides and sustains all that exists. He is free from the need of associates—wife or offspring. To Him belong the dominions of the heavens and the earth and He has no partner in His dominion.

Explanation of the Name, Al-Ghaniyy, from Sheikh as-Sa’di:

Excerpt:

AL-GHANI – THE SELF-SUFFICIENT, THE RICH AL-MUGHNI – THE SUFFICIENT, THE ENRICHER

He is Self-Sufficient completely and unrestrictedly, deference is given to His perfection and the perfection of His attributes. He has absolutely no deficiency of any kind, it is not possible that He be anything but self-sufficient, for self-sufficiency is from the necessary consequences of His person. Similarly, it is not possible for Him to be anything but the Creator, the All-Powerful, the Provider and Bestower of good. He is not in need of anything or anyone, He is he Self-Sufficient, in whose hands lie the treasures of the heavens and the earth, and the treasures of this life and the Heareafter. he suffices for the whole of His creation, and is sufficient for the believers of His creation in that he confers upon their hearts nurturing knowledge and he realities of faith.

Explanation of Al-Ghaniyy from the book, “Who is Allah?“:

Excerpt:

Tafseer

Allah (the Exalted) does not need His creation; He is self sufficient. He is the One Who enriches, provides and nurtures the creation. Ibn Katheer commented: Allah is Rich and free of needing anything from any of His creatures, while all of His creatures stand in need of Him. Allah’s bounty is encompassing, and what He has never ends. Therefore, whoever gives away good and pure things in charity, let him know that Allah is the Most Rich, His favour is enormous and He is the Most Generous, Most Compassionate; and He shall reward him for his charity and multiply it many times.

Application

Knowing that Allah (the Exalted) is the rich One, free of all wants and needs, the servants of Allah are inclined to see the value in worshiping Allah. The servants are poor and full of needs, and it is Allah who fulfills those needs for them. The hearts of the servants are filled with awe, inspiring devotion to the One who is rich and free of needs. The servants of Allah are also inspired, through Allah’s graciousness in providing for His creation, to give in charity to those who have less than they do. Allah (the Exalted) ultimately is rich and fulfills the needs of His servants, and the believers in Allah follow that example by sharing their wealth, seeking Allah’s pleasure thereby.
