Allah’s name Al-Hayyee— The Shy One— is not mentioned in the Quran but occurs in a narration of the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Al-Hayyee is the one who loves and inspires modesty and shyness in His slaves and who possesses the perfect modesty, so much so that He feels shy to leave those who ask Him empty-handed and doesn’t like to expose the misdeeds of His slaves!
The Shy One, the one of perfect modesty
Hayyee comes from the root haa-yaa-yaa, which points to four main meanings. The first meaning is to live. The second main meaning is to greet, and the third is to revive, vitalize and call into being. The fourth main meaning is to be shy or ashamed. This root appears 184 times in the Quran in 12 derived forms. Examples of these forms areyuhyee (“grants life”), hayyan (“alive”), and istihyaa’in (” shyness”).
Linguistically, haya refers to the attribute of modesty, shyness, humility, and bashfulness.Hayyee refers to the one who owns the perfect modesty and who controls the haya of creation, ashamed Himself to leave us empty-handed and so shy that He dislikes exposing the sins of His slaves.
The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: Verily Allah Mighty and Majestic is Haleem (Forebearing), Hayee (Shy), Sitteer (Covering). He loves modesty and shyness and covering. Therefore when any of you bathe let him cover himself (i.e. from the sight of people). [Abu Dawud, An-Nasaa’ee, al-Baihaqi, Ahmed, graded as saheeh]
Explanation of the Name, Al-Hayyiyy, from Ahadun Ahad:
It is narrated in the Sunan of Abu Dawood that the Prophet (S) saw a man bathing in a public place without an outer garment. The Prophet (S) mounted the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah, then said:
“Indeed Allah is characterized by modesty and concealment, so when any of you washes, he should conceal himself.”
The One Who is Bashful; His bashfulness is unlike that of His creatures, for there is nothing like unto Allah and His Names, Attributes, and Actions. His bashfulness is an attribute that suits His Majesty, and an abandonment of everything that does not befit His Boundless Mercy, and His Perfected generosity, clemency, and forgiveness. Al Hayyiyy, the One Who has full mastery over His creation, forbears to expose the sins and secrets of the one who even disobeys Him. He loves those who have hayaa –bashfulness.
Explanation of the Name, Al-Hayyiyy, from the book, “Who is Allah?”:
Ya‘lâ ibn Umayyah related that the Messenger of Allah (S) said: «Allah is Modest and He veils. He loves modesty and veiling. Therefore, if any of you takes a bath, let him veil himself.» (authenticated by al-Albâni)
Salmân al-Fârsi (RA) said that the Prophet (S) said: «Verily Allah is Modest and Honourable. If a person lifts his hands to Him (in supplication), He is shy to return them empty and disappointed.» (a sound hadith recorded by Abu Dâwood and an-Nasâ’i)
Tafseer Allah (the Exalted) is modest and shy, free from vanity, egotism, boastfulness, or great pretensions. His veil is a veil of light, and He loves modesty for His servants as well.
Application Knowing that Allah (the Exalted) is the Modest encourages Muslim servants of Allah to be modest in their dress and shy regarding their bodies. They wear loose clothes that do not show off their shapes. Female servants of Allah are proud to wear their hijab in public, knowing that Allah (the Exalted) Himself is Modest

Explanation of Al-Hayyiyy from Abdurrahman.org:
Shaykh Muhammad Khaleel Haraas -Rahimullaah- said:
‘The Name of Allaah Ta’ala al-Hayyee (The Shy One) is a Name which is appropriate to Him, and it is not like the Hayya (Modesty) of the creation, which is a change and effect, which seizes a person when he is frightened by that which brings him shame or fault. Rather it is leaving that which is not appropriate with His abundant Mercy and His perfect Generosity and Kindness, and His great Pardoning and His Gentleness.
So the slave of Allaah openly sins even though modesty is the thing that he is in most need of, and modesty is the weakest thing he has, and he uses Allaah’s blessings to sin. However, Allaah – Subhanahu– along with His perfection in not needing anything whatsoever and His complete ability over modesty, is shy from the slave from removing his veil and humiliating him, so Allaah covers up the slave with that which disguises him from the means of covering up, then after that Allaah pardons his sins and forgives them. Just like the hadeeth of Ibn Umar –Radi Allaahu anhu–:
‘Indeed Allaah comes close to the believer, and covers him then asks him, between Himself and the slave: Did you not do such and such, on such and such day? Until the slave of Allaah acknowledges his sins, and is certain that he will definitely be destroyed and Allaah says to him: I covered up your sins in the Dunyaa and today I will forgive them for you.’
