Explanation of Al-Haafidh from Islam Q & A:

The name al-Haafiz is mentioned in the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“He said: ‘Can I entrust him to you except as I entrusted his brother [Yoosuf (Joseph)] to you aforetime? But Allaah is the Best to guard (Haafiz), and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy’”

[Yoosuf 12:64]

Allaah also calls Himself al-Hafeez in several places in the Qur’aan. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Surely, my Lord is Guardian over all things (Hafeez)”

[Hood 11:57]

al-Khattaabi said in Sha’n al-Du’aa’ (67-68): “Al-Hafeez means al-Haafiz. Both are active participles but the form Hafeez carries a more intensive meaning, as in the words al-Qadeer (All-powerful) and al-‘Aleem (All-knowing). He guards or keeps the heavens and the earth and everything therein, so that they will remain for as long as they are to remain, and will not disappear. This is like the verses (interpretation of the meaning):

‘and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them’

[al-Baqarah 2:255]

‘And to guard against every rebellious devil’

[al-Saffaat 37:7]

He is the One Who protects His slaves from destruction and calamity and disaster, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“For him (each person), there are angels in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the Command of Allaah”

[al-Ra’d 13:11]

Explanation of the Name, Al-Haafidh, from Ahadun Ahad:

Al-Haafidh – The Guardian & Protector:

The One Who preserves all things; One Who preserves all creatures. He created the means for their livelihood and the guide towards those means, while making clear the good from the bad. Everything that the creation does is preserved and recorded in the Preserved Tablet. He is he One Who preserves His Awliyaa (Friends) from fitnah and affliction. The degree of His preservation depends on the degree of the compliance to His Deen, thus preserving from the torment of the Day of Resurrection

Explanation of the Name, Al-Haafidh, from Sheikh as-Sa’di:

Explanation of the Name, Al-Haafidh, from the book, “Who is Allah?”:

Allah (the Exalted) is the Guardian and Protector. He gives the example in the Qur’an of when He guarded the Prophet Solomon (S) from devils:

{And of the devils [the jinn] were those who dived for him and did work other than that. And We were of them a guardian.} (Qur’an 21:82)

Allah (the Exalted) has protected the Qur’an from being altered. He says:

{Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [the Qur’an] and indeed, We will be its guardian.} (Qur’an 15:9)

There is no greater guardian or protector than Allah (the Exalted).

Knowing that Allah (the Exalted) is the Guardian relieves anxiety from the hearts of the believers. The believers can put their full trust in Allah, knowing that Allah is the best Guardian. Worries disappear with the understanding of this name. In a trying situation, the believers can put their hearts at rest with the knowledge that Allah is the best Guardian, Who is watching and protecting.
