Explanation of Ar-Rabb from Abdurrahman.org

Excerpt:

Ar-Rabb is the owner who has full authority over his property. Ar-Rabb, linguistically means, the master or the one who has the authority to lead. All of these meanings are correct for Allah. When it is alone, the word Rabb is used only for Allah. As for other than Allah, it can be used to say Rabb Ad-Dar, the master of such and such object. Further, it was reported that Ar-Rabb is Allah’s Greatest Name.

Explanation of the Name, Ar-Rabb, from UnderstandQuran.com

Excerpt:

Rabb comes from the root raa-baa-baa, which points  to three main meanings. The first main meaning is to be lord, owner, or master. The second main meaning is to take care of, nourish,  sustain, and provide for, and the third is to raise or bring up.

This root appears 980 times in the Quran in four derived forms. Examples of these forms arerabbee (“my Lord”), al rabaaniyoona (“the Rabbis”), and ribbiyyoona (“religious scholars”).

Linguistically, Rabb is a term used for the owner (maalik), the master (as-sayyid), the one who takes care of, sustains, nourishes (al-qayyoom), and provides or takes care of everything (ar-razzaaq). [Lisan al-Arab by ibn Mandhoor].

Explanation of the Name, Ar-Rabb, from Sheikh as-Sa’di:

Excerpt:

Ar-Rabb (The Lord)
This name has been repeatedly mentioned in many verses. Ar-Rabb is the One Who nurtures and sustains all of His servants through regulating the affairs and granting all types of favours and blessings. More specifically He is the One Who nurtures and sustains his sincere friends by correcting and purifying their hearts, souls and manners. This is why their supplications are frequently made with this Noble Name because they seek this specific nurturing.

Explanation of the Name, Ar-Rabb, from the book, “Who is Allah?”:

Excerpt:

Tafseer:

According to aṭ-Ṭabari, the meaning of Ar-Rabb is: Our Lord is the Master without peer, nothing is equal to His dominion, He is the One who arranges the affairs of His creatures through the bounties which He liberally bestows on them, He is the Owner to whom the creation and the command belong.

Ibn Katheer commented: Ar-Rabb is the owner who has full authority over his property.

Ar-Rabb, linguistically means, the master or the one who has the authority to lead. All of these meanings are correct for Allah. When it is alone, the word Rabb is used only for Allah.

Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (S) said: «{On the Day We will say to hell: Have you been filled? –and it will say: Are there any more?} (Qur’an 50:30) On that, the Lord will put His Foot over it, and it will say: Enough! Enough!» (Bukhari)

Application:

Knowing that Allah (the Exalted) is the Lord of the worlds inspires His servants to worship Allah alone. Their faith is boosted, and they feel love and devotion towards Allah (the Exalted). Their bodies bow down to the Lord while their minds praise Him, and their souls are filled with love for, and faith in, the Lord of the worlds. Their belief drives them to put their trust in Allah, and they find solace in that trust, knowing that Allah alone decrees what will happen, and that Allah alone is the creator, owner, and Lord of all that exists.
